Hiking Magnificent Gjeravica, Kosovo’s Highest Peak

Planning to hike Kosovo’s gorgeous Gjeravica Peak? This comprehensive hiking guide covers everything you need to know. 

Located in Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park, Gjeravica is, without a doubt, one of the best hikes in Kosovo.

Soaring to 2,656 m, Gjeravica (also spelled Đeravica) is officially the highest peak in Kosovo and the second highest in the magnificent Accursed Mountains, after Albania’s formidable Maja Jezercë.

For those visiting in summer, expect to find turquoise alpine lakes, vibrant wildflower-strewn meadows, and rugged green landscapes that beg to be explored.

Best of all though are the unparalleled views that await on the summit, providing a glorious 360 degree panorama across the surrounding mountains that ripple their way towards the distant horizon.

Sitting close to Trekufiri – the three border point – it’s possible to hike Gjeravica from Kosovo, Albania or Montenegro via four different ascent routes. All can comfortably be completed as a standalone day hike but, more popular, is to climb the peak as part of a multi-day hiking trip through the region.

I hiked Gjeravica as a detour along the Peaks of the Balkans and it was one of my favourite days of the entire trip.

Whichever route you choose, this guide covers everything you need to know for hiking Gjeravica.

There are four key hiking routes that lead to Gjeravica, beginning from Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. These include:

Dobërdol, Albania   |   a remote mountain community on the west side of Gjeravica that crosses into Kosovo via the Ali Peja Pass and is the best option for those hiking the summit as part of the Peaks of the Balkans (located here)

Rupa Dobroš, Kosovo   |   a tiny hamlet near the Albanian border on the northwest side of the summit that is accessible from the village of Deçan (also spelled Desan) via the Deçan Valley (located here)

Bogićevica, Montenegro   |   the longest option originates from this summer katun and crosses into Kosovo via Qafa Bogićes, also approaching the peak from the west (located here)

Gropa e Erenikit, Kosovo   |   a small village on the east side of the summit accessible from the town of Junik and provides the shortest ascent route (located here)

The three routes ascending from the west intersect at Liqeni i Tropojës (Rupa Dobroš and Bogićevica) and Ali Peja Pass (Dobërdol) on the Albania-Kosovo border, while the single route ascending from the east (Gropa e Erenikit) joins the other trails on the saddle ridge directly below the summit.

Distances aside, all the routes have a moderate difficulty and are mostly straightforward with nothing particularly technical en route, though some rock scrambling is required on the steep, final approach to the summit.

Regardless of which country you’re hiking from, keep in mind that these mountains are remote and the tiny hamlets where these trails begin are mostly only accessible by rough 4WD roads which is precisely why so many visitors explore the area on foot.

That said, the road to Gropa e Erenikit is in the process of being paved.

Gjeravica’s proximity to the Peak of the Balkans makes Dobërdol the most popular ascent route, followed by Gropa e Erenikit.

It’s also becoming increasingly common to set out from either of the above starting points and finish up near Rupa Dobroš (or vice versa) rather than hike out and back along the same trail.

Whichever route you take, I’d highly recommend factoring in extra time to your day for lunch at the summit and a swim at any of the three stunning alpine lakes which lie tucked away in the vivid green landscapes that extend beneath the peak.

All the starting points for Gjeravica offer accommodation nearby that caters to hikers and often includes half or full-board meal packages.

For those hiking the Peaks of the Balkans, Dobërdol is the best starting point for Gjeravica, with the option to return via the same route or divert to Rupa Dobroš and rejoin the official trail the following day.

If you’re arriving from Kosovo, Gropa e Erenikit is the most accessible starting point with a selection of well-established guesthouses available.

Accommodation in Bogićevica is very limited with just a couple of basic options, while Babino Polje, located 5 km further down the valley, has many more options.

Bashkimi Guesthouse   |   Tiny Doberdol is especially isolated so don’t expect much in the way of creature comforts out here. Widely regarded as the best of the bunch in Doberdol, Bashkimi offers spartan bungalows with comfortable enough beds, hot showers, a heated sitting room and squat toilets only. Meals are plentiful and varied, while power is intermittent.

It’s not recommended to drink the water in Dobërdol so be sure to come prepared to purify or filter the water. We used Aquatabs, but virtually everyone else we met used a squeeze water filter.

Grand Gjeravica Hotel   |   In the remote village of Gropa e Erenikit, this sprawling wooden chalet offers cosy rooms, a communal lounge area with fireplace, a spacious terrace, and large indoor restaurant serving traditional home cooked meals. Guests love the warm hospitality and delicious food.

Gacaferi Guest House   |   Nestled on a scenic hilltop surrounded by lush pine forest at the end of the Decan Valley, Gacaferi is a simple but cosy refuge for hikers in the mountains. The host family is warm and welcoming and meals are served family style with delicious and traditional fare on offer.

For those hiking the PoB and keen to avoid having to back track to Doberdol, Gacaferi is popular choice from where you can reach Bogice Pass (Qafa Bogićes) in just 3.5 km and continue along the official route. Check rates and availability here.

Triangle Woodhouse   |   A favourite among hikers arriving in Babino Polje, Triangle Woodhouse offers a variety of simple rooms with a shared bathroom and guests rave about the homemade meals provided by the passionate host. Electricity and hot water are intermittent throughout Babino Polje and both wifi and phone signal are also mostly non-existent. Check rates and accommodation here.

While I completed the hike to Gjeravica from Dobërdol as a detour along the Peaks of the Balkans, the routes arriving from Bogićevica and Rupa Dobroš (Gacaferi Guesthouse) all intersect at the Ali Peja Pass and follow the same route the rest of the way to the summit.

Now, from Dobërdol, the trail to Gjeravica is clear and easy to follow once you’ve found it, but the path isn’t marked or sign posted and actually finding it to begin with can pose something of a challenge.

Peeling out of the village and up the valley is a maze of dirt roads that criss cross the green landscapes, making it hard to even follow on the map exactly which track you’re on.

Initially, we stuck along the wrong dirt road for far too long and ended up having to scramble up a grassy slope near the ravine at the far end of he valley in search of the correct path.

To avoid making the same mistake, keep along the main, most distinct dirt road, cross the river and continue past the beautiful two-story stone house (see above), keeping to the left of the small grassy hill.

About 1.2 km from Bashkimi Guesthouse, you’ll see a pair of very faint tyre tracks veering off to the left (see below, and also located here). Follow this and in about 700m you’ll find yourself on a faint grass trail which eventually turns into a more distinct dirt path.

Once you’ve found it, it should be smooth sailing from there.

Pushing on, the trail hugs the left wall of the valley, passing a cluster of summer settlements and a herd of horses on the opposite flank before pitching sharply upwards along a series of rocky switchbacks toward the Ali Peja Pass.

Marking the border between Kosovo and Albania, this saddle can be reached in about an hour and welcomes you with stunning views that unfold across the vibrant landscapes of Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park.

Vast swathes of forest fill the valley climbing into razor sharp ridgelines, stark chiseled peaks pierce the sky and colourful mountain huts speckle the countryside.

Continue to the right across the grassy slope, swinging around a bend in the hillside where the triangular peak of Gjeravica springs into view up ahead.

Following the contours of the mountain, the scenery here is impossibly picturesque, meandering through shamrock green meadows and carpets of wildflowers punctured by lichen-encrusted boulders and undulating streams.

After a further 2 km and a few more bends as you skirt around the head of the valley, you’ll arrive to the heart-shaped Zemra Lake (Liqeni i Zemrës).

Crystal clear and shimmering blue in the sunshine, it’s a wonderfully inviting spot for a refreshing dip, but I’d suggest pushing on for now, and stopping here after the summit to really make the most of it.

Above the lake, the path zigzags upward with the occasional steep drop off, bringing you over the ridgeline into the adjacent valley that sprawls beneath Gjeravica.

Below, two more equally inviting lakes – Vogel and Gjeravica – lie nestled in rocky basin with the distinct peak towering overhead.

Veering to the left, the path sticks close along the ridge and enters a rough boulderfield where some scrambling is required before arriving at the trail’s one and only signpost where the route from Gropa e Erenikit intersects.

From here, the summit can be reached in around 30 minutes, scuttling around the top of the verdant green bowl before pitching sharply upwards and becoming increasingly steep and rocky on the final approach.

On a clear day, you’ll be welcomed with sweeping panoramic views across the entire Accursed Mountains range.

The austere peaks of the Albanian Alps crowned by mighty Maja Jezerce tumble into the jagged walls of the Ropojana Valley in Montenegro, while the sprawling lowlands of Kosovo extend far below, climbing into an ocean of forested foothills and the knobbly spine of Hajla Peak.

Further afield, the majestic chain of the Sharr (Šar) Mountains straddle the border with North Macedonia, piercing the distant clouds like a mirage in the sky.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best views you’ll find anywhere in the region.

After a long lunch with one of Kosovo’s best backdrops, follow the same route back to Doberdol.

It’s a bit of a rocky scramble to get down from the summit, and again from Ali Pasha Pass – hiking poles are a good idea for these sections – but thankfully most of the return journey is downhill or along the flat.

Don’t miss the opportunity for a delightful swim at the lake on your way back, gliding through the cool water and basking in the afternoon sun to dry off.

For those already hiking the Peaks of the Balkans, you’ll be all too familiar with the occasional lack of signage along the route.

For Gjeravica, the trail is clear and easy to follow (for the Doberdol route at any rate) once you’ve found the actual trail, however, there are no trail markings or signage until just before the summit.

I’d highly recommend having an offline map available on your phone (I use maps.me) and downloading a gpx track for the specific route you plan to take.

Plenty of Water   |   Aside from the lakes, there are no water sources available along the trail. Be sure to bring enough for a long day of walking in full sunshine.

Lunch + Snacks   |   Needless to say, this trail passes through remote alpine terrain and there are no facilities located anywhere along route. Take all the food and snacks you’ll need. If you’re staying at any of the local guesthouses, you should be able to arrange a packed lunch for the hike, though a few extra trail snacks won’t go astray.

Swimmers + Towel   |   Few things beat a swim in the mountains after a hot, sweaty hike and the cool, clear water of Zemra Lake was an absolute dream on the descent from Gjeravica. You’ll likely have company here so don’t forget your swimmers and a descent sized, quick-dry towel. See options here.

Hiking Poles   |   A god send for the steep, rocky descent from the peak, hiking poles are a good idea for this hike to help take some of the pressure off your knees. I use the Mountain Designs Trekking Poles (for Aussies), or Black Diamond Trekking Poles.

Solid Hiking Boots   |   Though the trail itself is straightforward, the descents are rather rocky and having boots with descent ankle support and good grip are ideal. I use the SCARPA Cyrus Mid Hiking Boots or LOWA Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boots.

Sunscreen   |   This entire trail is exposed to the elements without a smidge of shade anywhere in sight so proper sun protection is essential, including a hat, t-shirt or long-sleeved shirt, and broad spectrum sunscreen with minimum SPF 30 (50+ is best) and a long resistance period (ideally 4 hours).

I use Neutrogena Beach Defence (SPF 50 / 4 hours for body) and Neutrogena Ultra Sheer (SPF 50 / 4 hours for face). Australia has very strict sunscreen regulations so the same formulas aren’t available internationally, but the products linked are similar.

Water Filter / Purification   |   For those coming from Doberdol, a reliable way to purify or filter your drinking water is essential. I use Aquatabs to save on weight, but virtually everyone else on trail used a Squeeze Water Filter.

That will really depend on where you plan to start and end your hike.

Officially, if you’re only crossing the border for the day and returning to the country of origin for the night, a border permit is not required. However, if you’ll be crossing from Albania or Montenegro into Kosovo (or vice versa) and overnighting there, a border permit is essential. For anyone hiking exclusively within Kosovo, you won’t require a permit here.

Those on the PoB should already have their border permits secured, but those following a different route should be sure to organise this paperwork ahead of time if needed.

Though I didn’t see any officials in the area, border patrols are more likely to occur between Montenegro and Kosovo near Bogićevica since there is road access nearby. Read more in this post on the border permit application process.

For many countries in the Balkans, the borders are often determined by the layout of the mountains and fall along clearcut ridgelines.

For this reason, a number of countries in the region have an ‘official’ highest peak which falls entirely within their borders and an ‘actual’ highest peak located along a border line which may be contentious.

In Kosovo, ongoing disputes over the exact demarcation lines of its borders has meant some discrepancy over exactly who gets to claim ownership over the peaks that fall within the contested border zone.

At 2,656 m, Gjeravica is officially the highest peak in Kosovo, however unofficially, Veliki Rudoka or Rudoka e Madhe nabs the title by just 4 metres at 2,660 m.

Rudoka is located in the Sharr Mountains on Kosovo’s southern border with North Macedonia, though there remains some controversy over which country the peak belongs to.

Summer is the perfect time to hike Gjeravica when the temperatures are mild, the landscapes are awash with greenery, spectacular wildflower displays erupt across the mountains, and it’s just warm enough to enjoy a swim in one of the many alpine lakes on offer.

Late spring and early autumn are also decent though you can expect temperatures to be much cooler, especially overnight, and the landscapes less colourful at these times of year.

Winters in this region of Kosovo are bitterly cold with snow a definite possibility between November and March. Hiking in the region at this time of year is not recommend unless you’re properly equipped and have mountaineering experience.
